Timor Dei and Timor Idololatricus from Reformed Theology to Milton

This article considers the unexplored concept of timor idololatricus (idolatrous fear) together with more familiar notion Dei (fear God) in Reformed theology and works John Milton (1608–74). After reviewing treatments from Augustine to Calvin, this study turns Milton, origins latter located compendia Amandus Polanus (1561–1610) his student Wollebius (1589–1629). Opposed Dei, signifies dread afforded idols. For as for Polanus, can be applied Catholic forms idolatry, but its principal sense is fear pagan gods. In offering a demonic reflection points commonality religious Christian worship, while also reminding due God.
